My name is Tinna Hongngam, and I am a Thai visual artist born in 1990. My artistic journey began at Silpakorn University, where I studied at the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, followed by a period expanding my visual language through graphic design studies at the Nova Institute of Technology in Melbourne.
Between 2013 and 2018, my contemporary practice focused heavily on the intersections of gender, violence, consent, and appearance. Drawing from personal experiences, I sought to confront challenging themes like sexuality and identity by merging my photography with tactical embroidery—using thread to weave new narratives directly into the imagery.
However, in 2024, my creative focus shifted toward the ancient language of raw textiles. While working at Studio Naenna in Chiang Mai, I immersed myself in traditional techniques like natural dyeing and ikat creation. It was there that I had the privilege of learning Karen backstrap weaving directly from master weaver P Duen. Using a backstrap loom means the warp is connected entirely between a fixed point and my own body, turning me into an integral part of the machinery. This profound, intimate relationship between myself and the fabric completely reshaped my perspective on patience, craftsmanship, and the creative process, and it continues to guide every piece I create today.
